MY ARTWORK

CHROMACELLS FROM SLICES IN TIME - INDIVIDUAL TINY ARTWORKS SLICED FROM A LARGE ORIGINAL

Through my work I explore the process of making through art. I trying to capture and share the simple joys within us brought out by the world we live in by using colours and texture.

I am interested in making large scale art installations and am looking for commissions I can be inspired by.

I enjoy working with a number of different mediums, currently I most often with Acrylic Paint and Oil Pastels.

Please take a look at the Gallery Page for examples of my work, or perhaps check out my Body Painting Page, and contact me if you are interested in commissioning me or buying my art.

My current work aims to explore the process of creating, using colour and texture to lead it instead of a final outcome.

I am creating large hand painted process driven abstract art, by drawing my attention to pleasing textures and colour compositions. My focus here is not on the overall composition, but the flow between each interesting part. In order to avoid viewing the art as a whole piece so that the process is not influenced by any conscious or subconscious desired outcome, I decide to destroy the Art by using a machine to cut it into small pieces once I have finished painting.

I call these machine cut pieces Chromacells. Each individual piece represents it’s own moment in time in my creative journey through the artwork. Since I am allowing a machine to decide how the piece will be cut up, I get to experience my art again in a new way.

I then use the individual Chromacells as inspiration for larger pieces of art, by rearranging the small pieces into new compositions, or photographing them and using them as a reference for larger detailed pieces.

Recently I’ve been using the medium of Punch needling and Tufting to create large soft and colourful wall hangings and floor rugs, so that the detail of my Chromacells can be experienced not just visually, but by feeling them also.

This process is exciting and invigorating to me. I know that each original painted piece of I create has a lifetime that comes to an end in order to make a new art; it becomes a slice of something new, which in turn becomes part of something larger and more complex.

To me, experiencing the physical life of the paintings I am creating becomes more beautiful because of it’s temporary nature; like watching a sunset. It will happen again tomorrow, but never in the same way, and once the day is gone, it’s physical presence is gone forever, with just the memory of the moment captured and documented to immortalise it - a Slice In Time.

WORKING WITH CRAFT

I enjoy working with many materials to create colourful and uplifting pieces of art that utilise various simple crafts that I was taught as a child, such as weaving, knotting, sewing, macramé, braiding or crocheting. These simple techniques are used to turn something small and simple and singular, into something large, numerous and decadent.

I believe that in a world of increasingly dominant technology, skills such as these are vitally important, not just for making and creating, but for allowing us to work slowly and mindfully, reclaiming and deepening our attention as well as empowering us to Make Something.
