Angry Pencil Collective
angry pencil - ARTIST COLLECTIVE
Angry Pencil is a grassroots artist collective based in Peterborough where artists come to reclaim their creativity and make big art - literally. It’s a space for painters, makers and creatives to come together, make work side by side and build something joyful without pressure or pretence.
Angry Pencil is a producer-led project by Rose Croft - a space where you can just be an artist. No workshops to lead, no projects to manage, no social media metrics to chase. Just the raw unfiltered joy of creating surrounded by others who share your passion.
We paint, we experiment, we connect. It’s about process not perfection.
What We’re About
Right now, Angry Pencil is all about hosting paint jams—relaxed, open events where artists of all levels can come together to create, share ideas, and collaborate. We meet mostly in community spaces, like West Raven Community Garden, and anyone is welcome to join in and jam alongside us. We’ve even invited poet collectives and other creatives to collaborate, adding fresh perspectives and energy to each session.
Why It’s Different
In a world that constantly asks artists to be everything at once; educators, facilitators, social media experts, Angry Pencil is a little bit punk. We’re about stripping it back to what matters. Creating for the joy of it. Making art big, bold, dirty, imperfect, raw and unapologetically yours.
It’s built with accessibility as the starting point and shaped around what the artists who take part actually want and need. Not the other way around. There are no gatekeepers, no outcomes to chase and no pressure to perform.
This is a space for artists by artists. Always.
Who It’s For
Angry Pencil is for artists at any stage of their creative journey. Whether you’re picking up a spray can for the first time or you’ve been making work for years, if you want to be in a space where art is made for the love of it, you’re welcome.
There’s nothing to prep if you don’t want to. No need to present. Just show up and paint.
How It Works
Angry Pencil is a producer-led project run by me Rose Croft. I plan, host and hold each event around my own creative capacity, keeping things simple, accessible and rooted in joy.
There’s no formal structure or organising team. Just me behind the scenes supported by the energy and presence of the artists who take part.
Most people come along simply to create, connect and be part of something without needing to take on extra responsibility and that’s exactly what the space is designed to support right now. This allows me to shape each event around what’s manageable and meaningful. As Angry Pencil evolves the way it's organised might shift too but for now this setup keeps it joyful, responsive and true to its grassroots spirit.
What’s Next?
We’re not about growth for the sake of it. Angry Pencil is about doing what feels right and joyful for us; staying meaningful and manageable with the capacity we have right now.
Angry Pencil has grown from a DIY spirit run on care, time and a lot of resourcefulness. It’s a grassroots effort at heart shaped around what's possible with limited means.
We’ve been grateful to receive support in the past like a sponsored lunch for artists from the KORP Dogs project which made a big difference. Most events though have been made possible through personal effort and informal support from the wider artist community.
Looking ahead there are hopes to secure funding to support more collaborations, pop-up events and bold creative experiments. If you’re interested in collaborating, contributing or supporting Angry Pencil in any way I’d love to hear from you.
